Industrial utilization at Kattameya plant started in July 2011

Suez Cement Group of Companies (SCGC) has started the implementation of an integrated alternative fuel (AF) system at Kattameya plant, in collaboration with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAAA). According to its Environmental Policy SCGC is planning reducing the utilization of traditional fossil fuels by feeding its kilns with AFs derived from agricultural waste e.g. rice straw or cotton stalks and municipal wastes.
"As part of the activities to enhance our sustainability, this project will realize environmental returns through the application of advanced technologies for using AFs in cement production operations, a matter which would maximize our competitiveness, and reduce the use of traditional energy sources thus helping the country especially during the Black Cloud Season. This will also relieve the community from the need to treat their waste materials and will also limit CO2 emissions", said SCGC Technical Director Carlo Foroni.
In this context, SGCC Environment Affairs Manager, Mohamed Aymen, said that following EEAA 2009 approval of burning agricultural and municipal wastes at Kattameya and Helwan plants, industrial testing started at Kattameya through a pilot feeding line. "All these products will be recycled and used as an alternative fuel after being safely burnt at cement kilns", Mr. Aymen noted.
The feeding line will be applied, as planned, at Helwan plant this year as well meanwhile the authorization for the Environmental Impact Assessment for using AF system at Suez plant is in progress.
