Cairo, 18 July 2007. Under the auspices of HE Aisha Abdel Hady, Minister of Manpower and Migration, ILO Subregional Office for North Africa in Cairo and Suez Cement Company launch a multimedia advocacy campaign “Salamtak Bel Donia” to promote a safety culture in the cement industry by raising awareness about the importance of safety and accident prevention principles and methods.Preparations for this campaign were carried out in close collaboration with the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the Egyptian Trade Union Federation, and the Federation of Egyptian Industries.

This campaign will be sensitizing workers, their families, communities and the general public as to the causes and consequence of work-related injuries; and means to avoid them. It intends to stimulate greater respect for occupational safety and health in Egyptian industry in general.

This nation-wide campaign will utilize media such as (TV and Radio) in addition to printed materials as posters in the streets and public transportation to disseminate widely occupational safety and health messages.

The magnitude and impact of occupational accidents and diseases, in terms of human suffering and related economic costs, have been a long-standing source of concern at workplace, national and international levels. Significant efforts have been made at all levels to tackle this problem, but ILO  estimates are that over 2 million workers die each year from work-related accidents and diseases, and that globally this figure is on the increase. Occupational safety and health has been a central issue for the ILO ever since its creation in 1919 and continues to be a fundamental requirement for achieving its objectives of ensuring Decent Work everywhere.

Suez Cement, as an Egyptian Company concerned with safety concept and with its Zero Accident programme is complementing ILO’s effort by waging a nation-wide safety awareness campaign in Cement industries, which constitutes a large segment of the construction industry.
