Suez Cement sponsors 3rd Helwan Marathon
Cairo, 21 April 2010. Suez Cement group of Companies (SCGC), the leading cement producer in Egypt, has taken part in Helwan Marathon, which was held in 15th May City in Helwan governorate under the patronage of H.E Mr. Qadry Abu Hussein, Governor of Helwan.
The marathon is held for the third time to celebrate Helwan national day and fully sponsored by SCGC. Attending the marathon were Helwan Governor Qadry Abu Hussein, SCGC Managing Director Roberto Callieri and a large number of Helwan officials and local leaders and members of parliament. More than 5,000 persons ran in the marathon including SCGC employees indicating their full support of the marathon and its theme, “Egypt, loyalty and belonging”.
“Sport is our vehicle to development and building of team spirit. We at Suez Cement are keen to see everyone working for the interest of this governorate which is a home to three of our five cement plants,” said Mr. Callieri.
Since 2007, SCGC has made relentless efforts to support the local community in Helwan and Maasara through a partnership with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM). Most recently in December 2009, SCGC signed a new LE 3.5 million agreement was signed with NCCM to create new job opportunities in Helwan and El Minya Governorates. With this agreement Suez Cement and the Ministry of Family and Population target the poorest and most vulnerable groups in Kafr El Elw, El Maasara areas and will build capacity to deliver more effective and efficient social services.
Suez Cement is a key player in the cement production in Egypt with industrial network of five plants in Helwan, Suez and El-Minya and annual production capacity of around 12 million meteoric tons of cement. As a committed and responsible business, SCGC has spent more than LE10 million on community support initiatives over the past three years.
