Open Doors Day at Tourah Cement plant, Egypt’s first cement company

On this occasion, the Company donated 1,100 tons of cement to support Friends of Children with Cancer Association

Helwan, 5 May 2009. Today, more than 2,000 residents from Al Maasara district (Helwan Governorate) had the opportunity to visit Tourah Cement plant, one of the five plants belonging to Suez Cement group of Companies.

Representatives of local authorities, the community, customers, and representatives of media and of Non-Governmental Organizations visited the festive and colored plant accompanied by the engineers of the plant who explained them the history of Egypt’s first cement company, the cement manufacturing process and its basic components as well as the Sustainable Development strategy.

The program for the day also included a concert, activities for children, various surprises, food and beverages. A special and very attractive animation corner was designed for the young visitors who were entertained with a particular festive program including a circus and a musical show performed by the children beneficiaries of the development project “Improving Living conditions of children and their families living in Tourah and Helwan” promoted by the Company in cooperation with the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood.

Since the environmental protection is one of the priorities of Tourah Cement many Open Doors Day activities focused on sensitize the visitors on the on-going environmental projects.

“This event is an occasion for the plant to promote better understanding of its business as well as its environmental and social initiatives. Today we celebrate the results achieved in the last three years from the plant and we are proud that, even from the very beginning, we have developed and implemented International strategies for environmental protection and also for the development of quality and environmentally-friendly products and services” said Sanad Morad, plant manager of Tourah Cement.

In 2008, in cooperation with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency and the World Bank, Tourah Cement has started the implementation of the EPAP II (Egyptian Pollution Abatement Project) to minimize dust emissions from the main stacks through the conversion of three electrostatic precipitators and the replacement of gravel bed filters with bag houses. The cost of this three-year project amounts of L.E. 132 million.During the event, Mr. Roberto Callieri, Managing Director of Suez Cement group of Companies, and Mrs. Faten Shery Naguib, chair person of Friends of Children with Cancer Association, signed an agreement for the donation of 1,100 tons of cement for the construction of the Health and Hope Oasis a supportive care center for children, especially children from low income families, in cancer treatment. The center will provide nutritional and emotional support to the children and their families during the critical stages of chemotherapy and recovery.

“Suez Cement group, which is strongly committed in being a reliable and social responsible citizen, has clearly identified the protection of children’s rights, especially the right to have access to health care and education, as a special issue of its social responsibility’s strategy. Today, we are very glad to support the Friends of Children with Cancer Association and we strongly believe that the Health and Hope Oasis will contribute in enhancing the quality of life of the Egyptian children with cancer” Roberto Callieri stated.

Suez Cement and its affiliated companies, Helwan Cement Company and Tourah Portland Cement Company, have already donated almost all the quantity of cement needed for the construction of the 57357 Children’s Cancer Hospital, which represents one of the largest hospital in the world dedicated to pediatric cancer care as well as it is a source of light and hope for the Egyptian and Arab children.
