Heidelberg Materials Managing Board visits Egypt, praises group’s national sustainability efforts

Heidelberg Materials Managing Board has completed today a visit to Egypt where they commended the company’s performance and praised Heidelberg Materials Egypt’s sustainability efforts.

“Throughout our visit, we have been truly impressed by Heidelberg Materials Egypt’s commitment to building a more sustainable future while simultaneously leading the Egyptian cement market. Heidelberg Materials has managed to overachieve in its national and global market expansion amidst unprecedented challenges over the past year,” said Dr. Dominik von Achten, Chairman of the Managing Board.

The Managing Board visit was led by Dr. Dominik von Achten, in the presence of Hakan Gurdal, Member of the Managing Board overseeing Africa and Mediterranean-Western Asia.

The Managing Board was received by Ambassador Yasser Elnaggar, Heidelberg Materials Egypt Chairman, and Mohamed Hegazy, CEO and Managing Director, who provided a complete market analysis and an overview of the company’s activities and achievements over the past year.

During the visit, the Managing Board, along with H.E. Ambassador Frank Hartman, Ambassador of Germany to Egypt, commenced the partial inauguration of the Waste Heat Recovery System in Helwan plant. This mega project will collect waste heat generated during the production processes and convert it into electrical energy that can support 30 percent of the plant’s electricity needs.

“We are proud to be the frontrunners of this effort in Egypt and, especially, in the cement industry. The Waste Heat Recovery System is a first-of-its-kind initiative that will play a crucial role in reducing energy use, costs, and CO2 emissions, by up to 40 Ktons per year. This is not only a leap in environmental sustainability, but also a great effort in supporting the national economy by reducing demand on valuable natural gas,” stated Dr. Dominik von Achten.

The board also reviewed Heidelberg Materials Egypt’s various ongoing sustainability projects, which support the implementation of the group’s Sustainability Commitments 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

The Managing Board also stressed on the importance of utilizing alternative fuel, as Heidelberg Materials Egypt is the first national cement producer to not only feed alternative fuel materials into the main burners but also all its running kilns.

During their time in Egypt, the Managing Board met with various public and private sector leaders in order to study and discuss various partnership and investment opportunities, with a focus on environmental sustainability.

This visit is the beginning of a wide tour the Managing Board will be holding across some countries in Africa and Mediterranean-Western Asia to ensure Heidelberg Materials’ ongoing progress and expansion worldwide.
